Class Profile: Retro Climbs 🚴‍♀️🎶

Say hello to Retro Climbs—a profile built for riders who love long, honest climbs and legendary music.

This ride features four sustained climbs, all set to what I’ll boldly say are some of the best possible songs from the 1980s—leaning into that alternative, retro vibe that defined the decade.

Here’s how the ride unfolds:

  • Climbs 1–3: ~8 minutes each
Start with a slower, steady climb in Zone 3, then gradually build into a faster climb in Zone 4. These climbs reward patience, control, and smart pacing.
  • Climb 4: ~11 minutes
The grand finale. This one starts faster in Zone 3, then grows progressively steeper and slower, finishing strong in Zone 4 for the longest—and most iconic—track of the ride.

Riders are welcome to stand whenever it feels right, making this profile adaptable for a wide range of athletes while still delivering a serious training stimulus.

Why the 1980s?

Because…I lived it.
I’m a true 1980s girl—college grad in 1984, dancing my heart out at DV8 nightclub in San Francisco starting in 1985 and beyond. These songs aren’t just “retro”—they’re woven into my muscle memory. IMHO, this playlist is as good as 1980s climbing music gets.

When should you teach it?

Honestly—any time of year. A great ’80s profile never goes out of style.

But if you want a perfect excuse to lean all the way in, mark your calendar for National Retro Day on February 27. It’s a super fun hook for sharing your love of throwback music with your riders. And if you want even more options, be sure to check out our Retro bucket playlist plus links to additional ’80s profiles here.
