In this second video filmed in the breathtaking landscapes of Hawaii for a Global Ride DVD, Tom Scotto and I build on the topic of whether instructors should ride at the intensity of their class. This time, we tackle a slightly cheeky yet practical subject: how to fake it when your riders don’t necessarily need to know you’re not working as hard as they are.
Let’s face it—many instructors hear this all the time: “I want to see you working as hard as I am!” But as we discussed in the first video, riding at full intensity too often can diminish your ability to coach effectively. Sometimes, it’s better to preserve your energy and focus on guiding your class. The trick is doing so without drawing unnecessary attention to the fact that you’re holding back.
Tom shares some hilarious (and surprisingly effective) strategies for those moments when you need to dial it down but still look fully engaged. His sense of humor shines through in this video, and you’re sure to walk away with a smile—and some clever new tricks!
